According to Helen Stone, an author and interiors expert who writes for magazines such as Inspirations, Real Homes and Gardens and Ideal Home , "instead of switching on those harsh , hideously unflattering overhead lights as the evening draws in, turn on the low-wattage bulb lamps instead. Nothing is more welcoming than soft pools of light dotted around a room, creating an illusion of warmth." Place some scented candles in front of a mirror, and the warm light will be magnified.
Brush strokes
Warm up a wall by painting a feature wall or even the whole room a hot new colour. Go for a fiery red, a burnt orange or a golden glow to really add some much needed colour and light to your space. Just because it's grey on the outside doesn't mean inside can't be ablaze with colour.
Move it
According to Helen Stone, "Simply rearranging your furniture can help make a room cosier. Move sofas away from draughty windows and closer around the fire to create a warm ambience. Placing chairs, footstools and cushions closer together will encourage your family and guests to gather round - perfect for those long nights ahead."
Soft furnishings
Make your indoors space comfy by adding lots of cushions, pillows, rugs and throws to your furnishings with warm, soft textured coverings for added snugness. Get out the draft excluders and put some rugs on those floorboards. Adding softness and warmth is key to creating a cosy space.
And finally....
Helen also recommends...keep flowers in the house as a reminder of the spring to come...if your ceilings are high and white, try lowering them by painting them a warmer, darker hue...and last but not least, fill your home with delicious smells, anything from warm bread to freshly brewed coffee to gorgeous vanilla, cinnamon or plum scents.
