Our shops are now full of great clothes for the Summer. Can your wardrobe handle it?
If you are looking for something to wear in the
sun and find yourself fighting off an
avalanche of thick sweaters, winter coats
and warm hats when you open your
wardrobe, it may just be time to
re-organise things a little and make
room for your summer wardrobe. |

Also, as the weather gets hotter, cosiness and comfy nooks are less important, and you may find that your bedroom suddenly seems far too full - all the cushions, extra rugs and other items that were once a necessary shield against the cold, are getting in the way. Some of this stuff will not be worn until the weather gets cold again, some of it requires mending and some of it you simply do not need any more at all.
Here are some ideas to cut through the clutter quickly and efficiently:
- Categorise Make separate piles of your trousers, blouses, shirts, skirts etc so that everything is organised.
- Boxing Clever Find five boxes and label them 'Keep', 'Repair', 'Charity', 'Bin', and 'Hold'.
- Put into Groups Sort through the clothing, trying on items you haven't worn for a while to see if they still fit, or that you still like them. Decide which items you will be wearing over the next few months and put them in 'Hold'. If you find any items that you like, but need mending or altering, put them in 'Repair'. There will be some things that you may not like anymore, in which case put them in 'Charity', while some pieces will be beyond repair (or beyond fashion!), so put them in 'Bin'. Finally, anything that is just too warm for the summer weather should go into 'Hold', ready for the onset of the cold (but let's not think too much about that for now.)
- Charity Begins at Home Take the 'Charity' box to the Salvation Army or somewhere similar for people who need them more than you.
- Mend some of the items in the 'Repair' box can be fixed at home - missing buttons, small darning jobs. Others are a bit more difficult so drop them off at a seamstress to have them mended and ready to wear as soon as possible.
- Getting Rid As emotional as it may be, some things just need to be thrown out, so get rid of the unsalvageable items.
- Back at Home Now put all the items from the 'Hold' box back in your wardrobe, sorting by clothing type and colour. If you have a separate space for the 'Hold Until' stuff, then pop those items in there, otherwise sort them in the same wardrobe. And it is all finished! Now you will be able to find whatever you like from your Summer Collection!
An added benefit of a bit of clearance is for your state of mind: having all the things you need easily accessible and more space to breathe is relaxing, satisfying and reduces stress. |
