Try something new

It's so easy to get into a rut and become caught up in the same routine day in and day out. But even the smallest change or new challenge in the way you live can have a knock on effect and soon you'll find other areas of your life have become transformed or moved in a new direction.

The boost you will get from adding an extra dimension to your life, by taking on a taxing project or overcoming a long-held fear, can work wonders for your self-esteem and you could find that simply by, say, losing a few pounds or flying for the first time your whole perspective on life will shift and you will boost your confidence and be able to rise to the next task with renewed energy and vigour.

If you've always wanted to go to an exercise class but have been too nervous to go on your own why not ask a friend to come along with you? You are more likely to keep it up if you are going to let someone down by skipping a week and you can offer each other support and encouragement along the way.

Someone to act as your champion and to cheer you on whatever you decide to do will act as a great motivator and they will help pull you up when you are feeling down and despondent.

Another great way to help you feel more fulfilled is enrolling in a new class at your local adult education centre, either in the evening or during the day, depending on your family and work commitments. Learning is good for the old grey cells and can be quite exhilarating. If tap dancing isn't your thing don't despair, have a look at what's on offer - you might be surprised by what's available, everything from Thai cookery to life drawing classes! Or why not plan ahead, save up and go somewhere wonderful with your girlfriends? Many hotels now offer special deals for spa weekends. You'll have a huge laugh and come back feeling pampered and beautified into the bargain.

And if you really want to try something different one of the easiest and most dramatic ways to change yourself is by looking at the way you dress and giving yourself a brand-new image. Start by throwing out all the clothes that you don't feel good in or that you're waiting to wear once you've lost weight. Then go through magazines and pick styles that you've always liked but were too afraid to wear. Try buying one new item a month that you would never normally wear. Killer heels or a longed-for piece of luxurious lingerie will make you feel like a million dollars and kick-start you off to a new you.
