Protecting your skin

The big chill has begun and the radiators are turned on high. Not great news for our skin, but with extra care and some common sense there are plenty of solutions to help avoid dry, flaky skin through the winter months ahead.

We’re all very adept at nourishing and caring for ourselves during the chill winter months with warming, thick soups and by piling on extra layers of clothes, but the harsh effects of the weather means we also need to keep our skin well-fed and protected too.

At this time of year skin is prone to flakiness and itching and needs extra special care to keep it hydrated and healthy. A combination of dry indoor heat, with less humidity, together with biting winds and freezing temperatures can really cause damage if the skin is left unprotected. And don’t forget it’s not just our face that is affected by the change in the temperature. Your hands, neck and body needs to be protected from chafing, cracking and drying out. But if you follow a skin care regime and some simple common sense steps your skin should remain silky and smooth during the months ahead.

1 – Try a moisturising body wash or a mild, fragrance-free soap if you have particularly sensitive skin when having a shower or bath.

2 – Always apply moisturiser within three minutes of getting out of a bath or shower to get the true benefits – and make sure your bath isn’t too hot either which can also dry the skin.

3 – Protect your hands by wearing gloves whenever you’re out. At home make sure you use a specific hand-cream that works well on cuticles and fingernails and minimise the drying effect of washing up by using Fairy Liquid which is formulated to be gentle on your hands.

4 – Even in winter you need a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 when you’re outdoors to combat the damaging rays of the sun.

5 – Don’t forget your lips and protect them with a lip balm and even lipstick can help prevent chapping.

6 – Remember to apply a bust firming treatment on a regular basis. You may have put the bikini away until next year, but even hidden areas need that little extra care at this time of year!

7 – Don’t forget your feet!  You need to get rid of dry, hard skin before you replenish them with moisturiser so either use a foot file or a salt or sugar scrub which will leave your feet smelling lovely as well and feeling as smooth as satin.

8 – And perhaps the most neglected area of all is our elbows! Regular exfoliation with something like a sea salt scrub is particularly good for elbows even though you may be the only one who knows they’re lovely and smooth!

9 – And finally keep moving! Cold weather can slow down circulation which can cause chilblains. But a brisk walk outside, will not only boost your energy levels but leave your skin glowing with health!
