Create a soothing
spa at home
Devote an entire day to you and you alone!
A day at a health spa is probably first on most women's wish list. But, what are your options if time and money aren't at your disposable? We've come to your rescue and put together a perfect pampering spa day for you to enjoy at home.

Your spa day timetable

8.30am Start the day with a cup of lemon and hot water- it will help cleanse your kidneys and digestive system.

9.30am Add some grapefruit and lemon essential oils to an aromatherapy burner, along with some boiling water. Sit on a comfortable cushion and relax your mind.

9.50am Stretch! Reach both hands above your head, link your hands and stretch towards the ceiling. Place your right foot behind your left. Reach your right hand above your head, towards the left. Swap legs and repeat the opposite side.

10am Hop into the shower and wash your hair and cleanse your face and body. Turn the water to cold just before you emerge - it'll wake you up!

10.15am Apply a hot oil or mask to your face and wrap your hair in a heated towel. Get dressed and head to the kitchen.

10.20am Make yourself a fruit salad or juice. Try a celery, carrot and ginger juice. It is lightly diuretic, while the ginger will help stimulate your digestive system.

11am It's time to get moving! If you have an exercise video, or yoga and pilates tape, put it on and do at least 40 minutes of movement. Keep some fluids nearby and sip slowly.

12.30pm Time for lunch. Don't sit in front of the television and eat off your lap. If you have to eat inside, sit at a table and set it properly.

1.30pm If you're wearing outdoor clothes, go for a walk. Or do some stretching, concentrating on clearing and focusing your mind.

2pm Make yourself a cup of herbal tea and sit in a comfortable position and sip it slowly.

2.30pm Time for some serious pampering. Cleanse your face and pat dry. Apply a facemask, making sure you've also covered your neck and decolletage. Return to your spa room and lie down on comfortable bedding, making sure your back and neck are well supported. Focus on your breathing. With each breath, focus on a different body part. For instance, on your first breath, focus on releasing all tension in your right foot. On your next breath, move your focus to your calf, and repeat the same relaxation thought.

3.30pm Bring yourself back to consciousness slowly. Slowly shake your arms and legs and sit up slowly.

4pm Rinse the mask off your face, and apply toner and moisturiser to your face, neck and chest area.

4.30pm Pamper your hands and feet with a manicure and pedicure. Use your favourite polish and give yourself a salon-worthy shape.

6.30pm Prepare a light, tasty and nutritious salad. Try not to have anything too heavy - fish or chicken is ideal.

7.30pm Run yourself a warm bath and add a few drops of lavender oil. Turn up the music, light some tealights and immerse yourself fully in the bath. Scatter a few drops of camomile or lavender oil on your pillow and bedsheets and make yourself a cup of camomile tea.

9pm It's early, but it's time to hop into bed. Listen to some music or read for about twenty minutes before setting these aside and turning off the light. Enjoy a restful night's sleep and look forward to a new, revitalised you tomorrow morning!

What you'll need

  • Peace and quiet is imperative for relaxation, so switch off your mobile and turn your answering machine on.
  • Make sure you have all the food and refreshments you require throughout the day (see our shopping list).
  • Stockpile your favourite CDs and make sure there are some soothing sounds in there.
  • Have you got enough candles, essential oils and relaxing bath oil? If not, pick up some while you're food shopping.
  • Around two litres of still water.
  • Try swapping your usual breakfast tea with peppermint or white tea. These help to relax you and restore balance to your system.
  • Make sure you're comfortable. Remember, no one's going to see you, so pull on your fleecy pj's and slippers, or favourite t-shirt and tracksuit pants.
