Allergen Reduction

Improve the air quality in your home by reducing the level of allergens that live
there!
Over 9 million people in the United Kingdom suffer from hay fever and airborne allergens, but whether you are one of them or not, everybody can benefit from cleaner air and reduced allergen levels.

Breathe easy

The situation is worse indoors than outdoors, with an estimated 20-30 times more pollutants in your home than in the garden. When you appreciate that people spend 75%-90% of their time indoors, it is obvious that something should be done to clean up the air.
It is best to tackle this problem room by room:

The Living Room
1. Upholstery should be covered in material that dust mites cannot colonise, e.g. leather or vinyl.

2. Use cotton throws on fabric-covered furniture and wash them regularly.

3. Cushions should be a material that can be washed at 56°C or above.

4. Hard flooring doesn’t collect as much dust, but for comfort, use cotton rugs and wash regularly.

5. As you may have noticed, electrical equipment attracts a lot of dust, so use a hoover that can be used on them.

Kitchen
1. As there is a lot of extreme heat and condensation in the kitchen, you can install an extractor fan to improve air circulation.

2. Regularly empty the water tray under the refrigerator to minimise the risk of mould forming.

3. Check that taps and fixtures are secure, and replace any components that could allow leaks through.

4. Use an electric cooker, and keep an eye on pots and pans so that they do not over boil and cause condensation.

Bedroom
1. Elaborate railings on the bed headboard and fabric hangings attract a lot of dust and can be a problem.

2. An electric bed will keep mites and mould away.

3. Use duvets rather than blankets, as these do not collect as much dust.

General
1. Reduce the number of ornaments and knick-knacks around the house, as these can attract dust. Keeping them behind a glass case might be a good idea.

2. Look for gaps in your wooden floors and seal them in, as these are attractive real estate for dust and mites.
